Assignment 5.1
I would like to teach English by using multiple methods. I think the communicative language teaching approach appeals the most to me because I think communication is important. I believe that the main goal of learning a language is that you’ll be able to use the language to communicate with others. Therefore, I would like to do expose my students to a lot of authentic texts and sources. I would like to do roleplay games and orals with them so they will really need to use the language. Of course, I will also teach them vocabulary and grammar because this improves their speech as well. Furthermore, I believe teaching vocabulary is really important nowadays. Children don’t read as much as they used to do before. Reading is an important tool to expand your vocabulary. I want to encourage and motivate my pupils to read and to expand their vocabulary. Vocabulary is important in speaking, writing, listening and reading. It is indispensable. I wouldn’t just teach everyday vocabulary though, like in the direct method, because the texts in finals contain a lot of difficult words. I do think that guessing words from context, like in the audiolingual method, is a good strategy to teach my pupils. Because whenever they don’t know a word because they never learnt it, they can still guess its meaning.
Another aspect I like about the audiolingual method, is the pronunciation aspect. I want to coach my pupils on pronunciation as well. If you pronounce a word wrong, it can have an entirely different meaning for the other person. And for some grammar rules it is important to know the pronunciation of a word as well. I think I can teach pronunciation to my students by doing some roleplay games and orals. This connects to the communicative approach again.
