What is marketing language?

To answer this question, we need to know the definition of marketing first. The definition of marketing is described in the Cambridge dictionary as: ‘’a job that involves encouraging people to buy a product or service’’. Easier said: marketing is convincing people to buy things. In order to do this, marketing people need to use language in a convincing way. Language is one of the most important tools they have. They use certain words to trick people into buying their product or service. Marketing language is used in advertising. You can find advertisements in papers, magazines, TV-commercials and posters. They are all around us.

Some examples of marketing language are:

  1. Buy two widgets, get them both at half price
  2. Buy two widgets, get them both at 50%-off
  3. Buy one widget, get a second one free

These three sentences all contain marketing language. They all try to persuade you into buying a widget and they all offer the same price. However, one of them is better to use in good marketing. This would be sentence number three because it is most appealing to costumers. The word ‘free’ is a magical marketing word. People fall for it every time.

Some other examples of frequently used marketing words are:

These words have, just like the word ‘free’, a big impact. You might not think so when you read them but you are influenced by them unconsciously.

Marketing language is basically an art. You have to use language creatively in order to persuade people.
