On this page, you can find the assignments I did in week 2.
Assignment 2.1
I think language doesn’t necessarily come from somewhere. I think it has developed itself for a very long time and in a lot of places. Therefore, it is not easy to point out where language comes from. It must have been a really long process of development. I think humanity first used gestures to communicate and after that random sounds. I think these random sounds eventually turned into the first words after a long period. And language is still changing all the time. Words are being added in our dictionaries and other words aren’t even used anymore. Language will constantly develop itself and change. For me as a teacher this means that there will always be new things for me to learn and to teach. It is important to follow the developments of language so I’ll be up to date.
Assignment 2.2
I mostly think in images but I also think in language. It’s a mix of Dutch and English. Dutch is more natural because it is my mother tongue but I hear, see and speak a lot of English so that’s becoming natural too. When I’m in deep thoughts were I am sort of speaking to myself in my head, it is mostly English.
I think thinking goes faster than speaking. Your thoughts are immediately produced by your brain. When you are speaking, these thoughts need to be spoken as well. And when we speak we can change the things we really thought. You can’t change your thoughts because you can’t choose to stop thinking them. Thoughts will always be there.
Assignment 2.3
I mostly dream in images. I rarely hear or see any language in my dreams. When I wake up I only remember flashes of things I’ve seen. Although, sometimes I do hear and remember language I dreamt.
I think blind and deaf people do dream as well. When a person hasn’t always been blind, he or she can still dream of the images he or she has seen in his or her life. However, when a person has never been able to see he or she probably won’t see images because he or she is unfamiliar with that. I think they dream of things they can hear, touch, smell and taste. I think deaf people dream of visuals, smells, things they can touch and tastes.
